Question #1What does S.A.I.L. mean?
Answer:S.A.I.L. stands for Services to Assist Independent Living.

Question #2Is there a S.A.I.L. in my community?
Answer:S.A.I.L. is a community support agency and there are community support agencies serving most commumities in Ontario.  A good place to check would be the Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA) website.  For communities in other provinces or in the United States try contacting the Canadian Association for Community Care (CACC) website.  These websites are listed on our Community Links page.

Question #3Does SAIL need volunteers?
Answer:SAIL is always looking for caring, enthusiastic individuals who can help us achieve our mission of providing community support services to the frail, elderly and adult physically disabled persons living in our catchment area.  Volunteers can help those people to live independently in their own homes within a supportive and caring community.

If this sounds like something you would like to assist with, go to our Volunteers page and read more about our volunteer positions and the application process.

Question #4Would I have to get a police check to be a SAIL volunteer?
Answer:Yes.  All SAIL volunteers are required to get a yearly police check.  Individuals who are interested in becoming a SAIL volunteer must fill out a SAIL Application Form, including at least two references, and  participate in an interview with the Coordinator of Volunteer Resources or other appropriate SAIL staff.  Individuals will also provide SAIL with a current clear Police Records Check and will provide one each year he/she serves as a SAIL volunteer.  Once an individual has been accepted as a SAIL volunteer, he/she is expected to attend any SAIL sponsored educational/training session.

These steps are meant to ensure the safety of SAIL's clients, as well as to ensure that a potential volunteer is matched with the most appropriate position within the agency.

Question #5Is SAIL a United Way agency?
Answer:No.   SAIL is an independent agency relying on fundraising and donations from the public to assist us in meeting our budget obligations.  SAIL is partially funded by the Ministry of Health Long Term Care Division, with SAIL raising approximately 40% of our annual budget.
